FAQ
Where will lessons be held?
Lessons are held online on Zoom.
If you are based in Singapore and want/require an in-person lesson, contact me through the Contact Form below.
What language will the lesson be in?
The lesson will be in English. However, you can prepare songs in any language that you like.
You talk a lot about voice science. Does this mean we will be using a lot of “science-y” equipment or software for our lessons?
Whether we’ll use software depends on the student and what we’re working on. However, where possible, I will always aim to provide you with a way to verify the feedback that I am giving you. This may be through software or simple physical checks.
One situation where we might use software is if you’re learning to match pitch. In such a case, I might ask you to download pitch monitoring software.
Even if we’re not using software, I might provide you with a simple physical check, such as asking you to place your fingers on your larynx to see if it’s rising or falling.
I understand that my approach might not work for every student, however, and I will do my best to adapt accordingly.
Do I need to know music?
No, but it definitely helps.
If I believe it is necessary for you to learn some basic music theory or if that’s what you want, we will go through it during the lesson.
If you want to get yourself up to speed first, these resources will probably be more than enough:
- How to read a staff: https://www.musicnotes.com/now/tips/how-to-read-sheet-music/ – You only need to read “The Staff”, “Treble Clef“, “Bass Clef” and “Step 3: Play a Melody”
- How notes are named: https://www.allaboutmusictheory.com/piano-keyboard/music-note-names/
- How to read movable-do solfege: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZR4Yetj5II

Do I need to prepare a song for my lesson?
No. If you have a song, that’s great. If not, there’s still lots of other stuff we can do.
However, once we reach a certain number of lessons, I may suggest that you bring a song to work on so that you can apply the concepts you have learned practically.
Will you prepare a song for me?
No. Picking a song for you is very likely to lead to disappointment as I may not share the same tastes as you.
Do I need to have specific goals?
That would be ideal, but it’s not necessary.
You might just want to “learn to sing” or “get better at singing” and have no idea where to start. I don’t want that to be a roadblock to you experiencing the joy of learning to sing and exploring your voice.
What do I need to prepare?
If our lesson is on Zoom,* you will need the following before the lesson:
- Zoom downloaded beforehand
- Decent enough Internet connection to handle video calls over Zoom
- Decent enough camera and microphone to hear and see you well
- Headphones/Earphones to prevent echo
- A device where you can turn on “Original Sound” (i.e. turn off noise cancellation)
You do not need any prior experience or knowledge. Instead, all you will need is an open mind and a willingness to try new things. Ideally, you should also be in a place where you’re comfortable making silly, weird and/or possibly loud sounds.
Note: All lessons are recorded and sent to you, meaning you will not need to worry about memorizing anything.
